30 years of experience? Who cares

March 05, 2025

If you’ve been doing something for 10, 20, or even 40 years… does that automatically make you great at it?

On President’s Day weekend, I realized the answer to that question.

We took the family to Park City, Utah, for a ski trip.

I’ve been skiing this mountain since I was 4.

That’s 40+ years of experience on the slopes.

I know the mountain like the back of my hand.

So, even though it’s been a couple years, I anticipated carving it up like a pro.

Spoiler alert:

I wasn’t!

Meanwhile, our older kids, who’ve taken 10+ years of professional training lessons, flew down the mountain with speed and skill.

Pierce (my son) was even handling double black diamonds and moguls like it was nothing.

I never loved skiing big moguls anyway, but I had a harsh realization on the mountain that weekend:

I’m not much better skill wise than I was at 16.

Years of Experience ≠ Competency

I’ve been skiing for decades.

But without engaging in training, learning, coaching, and pushing myself to improve, I’ve basically been skiing at the same high-intermediate level for 30 years.

Not growing to be an advanced skier at all. Major plateau.

6 of 7 Willardsons skiing together in Park City!

Not growing to be an advanced skier at all.

Major plateau.

The same thing happens in life and business.

You don’t get better just because time is passing by!

It’s what you do with that time to improve that counts.

I see people brag about their “20-30 years of experience” all the time…

When really…

It’s just ONE year of experience

Repeated the same way 20 to 30 times.

Great sign I saw on the mountain – had to snap a pic for this newsletter!

So, let me ask you this:

Where in your life or business have you plateaued?

And how can you start getting better again?

Because growth happens only when you take intentional action to improve, most often supported by professionals holding you accountable…

Not by adding years under your belt.

Here’s to intentional improvement,

Chad
