The cost of freedom

(My wife getting a new Half-Ironman PR in Mexico City running with the American Flag).

May 25, 2025

Happy Memorial Day weekend.

Every year, we’re given a gift.

A gift that comes disguised as:

  • Burgers
  • Beach towels
  • And a day off work

The freedom to chase big goals…

The chance to raise strong families, grow businesses, and live the way we want to…

None of it just showed up.

It was paid for.

And the cost wasn’t small.

620,000 to 750,000 people gave their lives during the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865), making it the deadliest conflict in American history.

Memorial Day actually began in 1868 when General Logan called for Americans to honour fallen soldiers of the Civil War by decorating their graves.

That first year, 20,000 graves were adorned at Arlington.

Here we are now in 2025.

Over 150 years later, we’re still benefiting from the sacrifice of those who came before us.

At our house, we fly the American flag proudly (grateful to say most of our entire street does).

Our kids place small flags and flowers on veterans’ graves at the VA Cemetery.

(Not because they fully understand all the history, but because we make sure to emphasize what it means to be in a free country).

Tomorrow at 3:00 p.m…

Wherever you are…

I hope we all take a moment to join in the National Moment of Remembrance.

One minute of silence.

One minute of gratitude.

Because the more we teach the next generation to honour sacrifice over selfishness…

The stronger our families and our country become.

“He who would accomplish little must sacrifice little;

He who would achieve much must sacrifice much;

He who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.”

So this weekend…

Enjoy your family.

Fire up the grill.

Be fully present.

But also grateful.

Because freedom, business and relationships wouldn’t be possible without sacrifice.

Have an amazing weekend.

Chad
